Last night at 8:00 PM in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Cleveland Browns were on the clock with the number one pick for the first time since 2000. Although the Browns have historically been bad, they haven't been bad enough to snag the number one pick in the draft for a while. Then this year, they went 1-15 and got the number one pick. In addition to the number one pick, they had the number 12 pick from the Philadelphia Eagles, which I'll get into later.
Now if you've seen the movie "Draft Day" you'll know that the movie is totally unrealistic. In the movie, the Browns actually did well on the first day of the seven-round NFL Draft. This year however, I think the Browns actually did well on draft day, and here's why:
The consensus number one draft pick going into the draft was Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett. And the Browns went right ahead and selected Myles Garrett with the first pick in the 2017 NFL draft. Personally, I really like this draft pick. Garrett stands at six feet five inches tall and weighs a whopping 271 pounds. And get this, he's fast. Garrett ran a 4.64 second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine, which is very fast for a defensive end. Garrett's speed combined with his strength is one of the many reasons he's so good as a defensive end. In 10 games last season, Garrett had nine sacks, 33 total tackles and nine forced fumbles. I think Garrett can be a great defensive end for years to come and that for once, the Cleveland Browns did not mess up a draft pick.
Remember, the Browns also had the number 12 draft pick from the Eagles. However, they didn't select anyone with the 12th pick. They traded it to the Houston Texans for the number 25 pick in this year's draft and a 2018 first round pick. With the 12th pick, the Texans then went ahead and took Deshaun Watson, quarterback from Clemson. I'm not going to comment on this pick as it wasn't the Browns pick.
If we skip ahead 13 picks, we find the Browns once again on the clock at number 25 from the Texans. With this pick, the Browns took safety/linebacker/kick and punt returner Jabril Peppers from Michigan University. I'm not sure yet about this pick. Peppers is no doubt a good player, but he is primarily a safety and I have concerns with his coverage abilities. We'll see how this one turns out for the Browns.
Then came another trade. The Browns snuck back into the first round by trading their second round pick this year and their fourth round pick this year for the number 29 pick from the Green Bay Packers. With this pick, they selected David Njoku, a tight end from Miami University. I really like Njoku. His ceiling is huge, meaning he has a lot of potential. He's already a great pass catcher and route runner, but he does need to work on his blocking.
All in all, I think the Browns had a pretty good draft this year. They ended up with three first round picks, including the number one pick. Myles Garrett, Jabril Peppers and David Njoku are three solid players who I think have a lot of upside. Overall, I think this was the first year in a while that the Browns didn't mess up a draft. Who knows, this might be the beginning of a bright future for a team that's been bad for a very, very long time.

Good article and I hope the Browns makes some more good draft decisions in the future.
